The short version

Your workouts, drives, expenses and photos are stored on your iPhone and back up to your own iCloud Drive. A few things do leave the phone: Apple's map service receives the coordinates it needs, and Expo's update service receives a random ID for your install. Details are below. We receive nothing unless you email it to us.

What leaves your iPhone

Us

Nothing automatically. We get only what you email us.

Apple

Your iCloud Drive backups go to your own iCloud account. To draw a map or turn a location into a name like "Manhattan, New York", the app asks Apple's map services, which receive the area or coordinates involved. Siri handles what you say to it. Apple handles all of this under its privacy policy.

Expo

When you open Kilamile, it may check Expo's update service (expo.dev) for a newer version of the app's code. Each check sends the app version, the platform, your IP address and a random ID created for your install, which stays the same from one launch to the next. The check carries no workouts, trips or other records. Expo's privacy policy says it may collect the device's operating system and these random tokens to tell whether an update was downloaded, and keep them as long as reasonably necessary. If we turn these checks off, we'll take this row out.

Anyone you choose

Share cards, GPX files, reports, the CPA package, backup copies and diagnostics leave your iPhone only when you share, save, email or export them, and go only where you send them.

We don't give these companies anything beyond what's listed here. We expect them to protect it at least as well as this policy does.

Permissions and why

PermissionWhat it's for
Location (While Using)Records the route and distance of your workouts.
Location (Always)Only if you track business driving: notices drives in the background so business miles get logged. With Workouts only, the app uses location only while a workout records.
NotificationsShows a finished trip so you can sort it, and reminders from the app. Notifications are created on your iPhone.
CameraPhotographs your odometer or a receipt, when you choose to.
Photos (pick a photo)Lets you pick a receipt or odometer photo you already took. The app only sees the photo you pick.
Photos (add only)Saves the share cards you make. Kilamile can't read your photo library.
Calendar (optional)Suggests the business purpose of a drive from the event you drove to. Events are read on your iPhone. Only a suggestion you see on the trip is saved, and your calendar isn't copied anywhere.
SiriLets you log, start or end a trip by voice. Apple processes what you say under its own privacy policy.

You can change any of these at any time in the iPhone Settings app, under Kilamile.

How long things stay

  • Trips, expenses and their records stay on your iPhone until you delete the app. Deleting a trip or expense marks it deleted and takes it out of your reports. It stays on record so the log keeps its history, and you can restore it.
  • Workouts stay until you delete them. Deleting one erases it from this iPhone with its route. Backups already made keep a copy until they age out.
  • The tracking log is deleted after 21 days.
  • Backups: each iPhone keeps its newest backup for each of the last 7 days and each of the last 12 months, and its newest for every year, with no end date.
  • Email you send us: we keep it as long as we need it to help you. Ask us and we'll delete it.

Your choices

  • Delete a record: open any workout, trip or expense in the app and delete it. What that does is described above.
  • Delete everything on your phone: delete the Kilamile app.
  • Stop backups: turn off Automatic backups in Settings › Backup.
  • Delete your backups: the backup files are hidden from the Files app, so removing the Kilamile folder there doesn't remove them. Use the iPhone Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud, then Storage or Manage Account Storage, and look for Kilamile. If you don't see it, write to us and we'll work through it with you.
  • Get a copy: Settings › Backup › Save a backup copy… makes one file with all your data. Workouts also export as GPX.

We don't hold your records, so we can't access, correct or delete them for you. These controls are on your device. Email you sent us is the exception, and we can delete that. If you have a question about your rights where you live, write to us and we'll help.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell or rent your personal data, or share it beyond what this page lists.
  • We don't show ads or track you across other apps and websites.
  • The app doesn't run analytics or crash-reporting services of ours.
  • Kilamile doesn't ask you to create an account.

Purchases

Nothing is sold during the beta. When subscriptions to the business plan (Kilamile Pro in the app) go on sale, Apple handles the payment through the App Store and we don't receive your payment details. The app checks your subscription status with Apple on your device.

This website

kilamile.com runs on Vercel, whose servers see requests the way any host does, such as your IP address and the page you asked for. The site sets no cookies, runs no scripts or analytics, and loads nothing from other companies. If you ask for a beta invite, we get your email address and use it to send you the invite.

Children

Kilamile isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. Any change to what leaves your iPhone gets announced in the app first. A future Apple Watch app would mean an update to this policy too.
